What Does a Medical Assistant Do?
Medical Assistants (or Certified Medical Assistants) provide administrative, clerical and medical services in physician offices, medical clinics and facilities and/or hospital environments. Medical Assistants are tasked with helping perform admin and clinical support to medical practice staff and medical professionals, such as helping and engaging with patients directly, assisting with patient intake, taking vital signs and performing other activities as needed.
Medical Assistant Job Overview
In the Medical Assistant role, you will serve an important role in the total patient care experience. You will welcome patients, document medical history, record insurance information, assist with lab services and hospital admissions, and support physicians during patient care. Specific tasks, performed under the direction of the medical practice staff may include maintaining patient health records and insurance coverage, assisting with medical lab services such as collecting patient samples and helping during clinical examinations. You will also be responsible for administrative tasks in the office.
You will work directly with patients such as providing them information on standard medical procedures, taking vital signs and assisting physicians and nursing staff in providing care. Success in this role will be demonstrated by efficiently providing support services from both an administrative and clinical perspective to ensure a positive patient care experience.
Medical Assistant Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist in medical office duties such as welcoming patients, checking and making appointments, answering phones, managing vendors, managing patient check-in and check-out
- Provide support services to practice medical staff before, during and after patient visits
- Assist physicians and medical support staff during patient medical examinations
- Check and record vital signs (such as blood pressure, pulse and temperature)
- Help with recording medical information, test results, patient records and insurance documentation
- Help maintain patient digital and hardcopy records
- Perform work in accordance with all applicable patient care standards
- Prepare and clean patient rooms and equipment; keep office environment and patient waiting area clean
- Assist with all admin services such as accurately handling medical practice invoices, payments and insurance documentation
- Assist staff in managing, ordering and restocking medical supply inventory
- Comply with HIPAA regulations by protecting confidential patient data
Medical Assistant Job Requirements
- 2+ years experience as a medical assistant or in a related healthcare delivery role
- Prior experience in a medical office, clinic or other healthcare facility
- Knowledge of medical office practices and procedures
- Basic computer & technology skills (e.g. Microsoft Office), particularly in a healthcare environment; experience with patient management software and/or electronic health records a plus
- Very positive and friendly attitude
- Dedicated to delivering excellent customer service in a patient-friendly manner
- Strong language and communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and compassionately (good “bedside manner”)
- Ability to take direction and multi-task
- Strong work ethic, dependable and punctual
- Positive recommendations from prior work experience
- Associate degree in medical field; bachelor’s degree a plus
- Medical assistant program certification
