What Does a Barback Do?
Barbacks work behind the scenes to support bartenders and other staff members. They assist with opening and closing the bar area and prepare the bartender’s work station. Additionally, they serve food and drinks to patrons, and assist with the establishment’s inventory management and reorder processes.

Barback Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Prepares and cleans the bartender’s work station
- Ensures that the bar area is stocked with the necessary items, food, beverages, and liquor
- Familiarizes self with menu items and any changes
- Does minor repairs to bar fixtures when required
- Handles customer queries
- Takes orders, buses tables, and prepares drinks for patrons
- Escalates any major concerns to management
Barback Job Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Must be of legal drinking age
- Customer-centric with a pleasant demeanor
- Computer literate
- Has basic math skills
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and late nights
- Food handler and liquor certifications are preferred
